The music rises from near silence: strings sound a bare D, and horns add a repeated-note figure. Soon the D splits into E-flat and D-flat, a dissonance that at the end. After the come a slower, quieter in A major, which comes back before the next , and a third in D minor with prominent horns. The follows; the is not a literal repeat. The builds a that settles nothing and ends on open fifths.
Section boundaries in music are not always sharp; a transition may be felt over a pause or a held chord.
