The music opens in D minor with a single held D, then the choir enters very softly on a D minor chord for the words (eternal rest). A first comes on (and perpetual light), then fades. In the B section all the voices call out Exaudi (hear). The repeats a simple melody sung earlier by the tenors, first in and then in four-part harmony. is more urgent, and the last (the final eleison ) is very soft.
Section boundaries in music are not always sharp; a transition may be felt over a pause or a held chord.
