The opening flourish and the hero's (Don Juan 1) as the thread of the piece (Don Juan 2 to Don Juan 5). The first love scene, the Countess, features a violin, and the Anna holds the long oboe love song. Short passages of refusal (Rejection 1 to Rejection 3) alternate with the love music. A carnival follows, then Memories. In the final section (Death / ) the music stops, a dissonant trumpet note marks the fatal stroke, and three quiet chords the work.
Section boundaries in music are not always sharp; a transition may be felt over a pause or a held chord.
